Building on the foundation laid in EAST1010 (or equivalent), this module aims to further enhance all four basic language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—in a well-balanced manner. Students continue to engage in an interactive and communicative learning environment, fostering practical language use in real-life scenarios. The module emphasises the application of language skills in authentic contexts. These activities reinforce language concepts learned in EAST1010 and introduce more complex language structures.
The aim of this module is to act as a continuation of EAST1010 (or equivalent), enabling students to establish a robust foundation in the four fundamental language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, within an engaging and interactive learning environment.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrate proficiency in employing diverse grammatical structures in Chinese, showcasing mastery of sentence construction, including complements, particles, aspects, and comparisons.;
2. Read and translate short texts on a number of topics covered on the module from Chinese into English and vice versa;
3. Comprehend and appropriately respond to authentic spoken Chinese on covered topics using relevant vocabulary and grammar.;
4. Produce structured pieces of writing on a number of topics covered during the semester.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Work independently to consolidate material covered in class;
6. Show intercultural understanding and awareness of Chinese cultural contexts;
7. Adopt effective and proactive language learning strategies.
